Developing a unique market position

Donald Ellis, Donald Ellis Gallery: Hambly & Woolley helped me establish my brand. Twenty years ago, I was a dealer with an interest in historic First Nations art. Despite their historical and artistic significance, the objects held little interest or value with art collectors and patrons. Elevating the work for presentation to the art world was a major departure – and a far more difficult process than one can imagine.

H&W: Our challenge was to unlock the story behind each piece to showcase its value. Don invested substantially into researching the provenance of each work. These efforts, combined with our visual positioning, enabled us to powerfully document and promote the work through catalogues, websites and books. Donald Ellis is now known internationally as the world’s pre-eminent dealer of historic North American Indian art.

Donald Ellis, Donald Ellis Gallery: The catalogues we have developed are an artfully successful blend of modern, forward design combined with more traditional aspects of art history and scholarship. They are in demand from dealers, collectors and libraries – including the Library of Congress – and have received numerous awards from the worlds of both art and design. H&W has played a key role in both the growth of my gallery, and in securing an appropriate position for historical North American Indian art.

Working with H&W on our catalogue is a highlight of my year. In no other professional relationship is the collaboration of ideas so seamless and intuitive.
